Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz is a board-certified periodontist and an internationally recognized educator and researcher in the fields of periodontics and implant dentistry. He is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, and currently serves as Director of Graduate Periodontics. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of The International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry (IJPRD).

Dr. Avila-Ortiz earned his DDS and PhD from the University of Granada in Spain, followed by a Master of Science degree and a Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Dr. Avila-Ortiz has co-authored numerous articles published in peer reviewed journals and several book chapters. He is also the co-author of the book “TISSUES: Critical Issues in Periodontics and Implant-Related Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery”, which has been critically acclaimed within the profession and translated into multiple languages. Dr. Avila-Ortiz has received numerous honors, including the AAP Distinguished Scientist Award in 2022.
